WFR Course

Wilderness First Responder

The Middle Fork of the Salmon is a pristine, free-flowing river that runs 100 miles through the heart of the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Area- the largest wilderness area in the Lower-48.  This remote paradise is the perfect place to develop and practice wilderness medicine in a realistic setting.  Middle Fork Adventures is proud to offer you professional-level training in the wilderness environment.

We will begin our adventure at our facility in Salmon, ID.  Day one is a classroom day where we will set ourselves up for success by covering baseline knowledge.  The next day we set out for the river and into the wilderness.

Each day will include both lectures and hands-on practical work, culminating in full-scale realistic rescue scenarios. Participants are expected to paddle together as a team, at the direction of the guide.  Together we will navigate Class IV rapids!  We will also do our best to make time to enjoy some of the amazing offerings of the wilderness area- hikes and excursions to hot-springs are highlights!

By the end of the course, the confidence instilled in participants through physically practicing the skills we learn all week is immeasurable.  Participants who successfully complete the course will be issued 3-year WFR Certifications.

Wilderness First Responder Class

Perfect Timing

  • Open up your summer season by upping your medical game!

  • High water is more exciting, and allows us extra time in camp since the water is moving faster.

Amazing Setting

  • You get 6 days to develop and hone your wilderness medical skills in a real-life wilderness area.

  • Learn to analyze complex scenarios in a realistic setting with all the difficulties that occur in real-life.

Expedition Mindset

  • Learn planning and operational skills from our team of professional guides.

  • Be part of daily briefings and decision-making.

  • Build positive team dynamics on our most participatory trip by practicing communication.  Be prepared to help out in camp with basic chores such as setting up and taking down tents, loading and unloading boats, and kitchen crew support.

Wilderness Time

  • To be sure, the course schedule is busy and intense, but we intend to make time to enjoy what the wilderness has to offer us.

  • Soak aching muscles in a hot spring, hike to a vista to clear your mind, or just soak it all up from the comfort of the camp chairs!

Middle Fork Adventures specializes in remarkable wilderness expeditions. This is the adventure of lifetime!

  • All camping gear is included. We ask guests to partner up in our spacious 5-person tents, leaving plenty of space for you to sleep off the ground up on our cots. Sleeping bags and standard pillows are also provided.  If you require a private tent, you will need to bring your own, and it must fit, along with your personal gear, into the large dry bag we issue you prior to the trip.

  • We provide all the food for the trip from lunch on June 2 through lunch on June 8, and our guides take pride in serving you the best food in the wilderness.

  • A small amount of wine is provided at dinners. You are more than welcome to bring additional beverages for consumption in camp after class is over. We will have plenty of safe storage for it.

  • Camping is available for the evening of June 1 and June 2 at our Salmon, ID boat yard.
